Community Outreach
Surrey Place Centre
If you're walking through the halls of SPC on a Thursday evening, don't be surprised if you hear a group of voices singing…because the
"Symphonic Passion Chorus" is back for its second season! The Symphonic Passion Chorus is a group of Surrey Place Centre adult clients who
share a passion for music and singing.
Just to recap, during our first year the Chorus had the opportunity to perform in four separate concerts. Our performance run began with an in-house Christmas Concert, followed by an SPC fundraiser gala night (The Rocky Horror Picture Show). We then proceeded to sing at the Donor Recognition night and finished the season with a Spring concert.
This year our chorus continues to develop; with anticipated performances that will entertain and enchant! With new members, to mix up the group and the addition of a violin accompanist, we are sure this year will be another resounding success!
Moreover, we are very excited to announce the formation of a new cooperative partnership with another community choir, Counterpoint Chorale. The two choral groups have decided to expand their collective experiences and have agreed to participate in a united singing venture. Their first concert will take place on Friday November 30, 2007 at 7:30 pm at the Church of the Holy Trinity (right beside the Eaton Centre). Counterpoint Chorale will also be fulfilling an important mentorship role with the Symphonic Passion Chorus, helping its members to learn to sing more challenging choral pieces with greater confidence.
We encourage all community members and Surrey Place clients to come out and support future announced choral concerts!
Note: The Symphonic Passion Chorus was formed and is under the direction of Bruce Edwards (Speech Language Pathologist) and assisted by, Christine Hein (Occupational Therapist). We would also like to acknowledge the various volunteers that have worked with the choir, without whom we would not be able to function (Holly Duffy, Laura Farberman, Rebecca Brenner and Alena Marshall).
Symphonic Passion Chorus and Counterpoint Chorale
Counterpoint Chorale has formed a partnership with The Symphonic Passion Chorus of Surrey Place Centre to learn through singing and
celebrate a mutual passion for music. Counterpoint Chorale is delighted to form this unique partnership with Surrey Place Centre.
The Symphonic Passion Chorus is a group of Surrey Place Centre adult clients with a passion for music. Under the direction of Bruce Edwards, Speech-Language Pathologist, and Christine Hein, Occupational Therapist, and with the help of volunteers, the choir first came together in November 2006. Using unique software, song lyrics are assigned symbols to aid choir members with word recognition. The choir rehearses once a week and performed their first concert in December 2006. The Symphonic Passion Chorus has performed at various functions since then.
Surrey Place Centre is an interdisciplinary, community-based agency committed to enabling people living with developmental disabilities and their families to enhance their quality of life through integrated service, research and education.
"Living your potential - All your life!" Surrey Place Centre helps clients achieve this vision through inspired leadership, service and research excellence, community collaboration and creative capacity building.
